Loxodonta exoptata is an extinct species ofelephant in the genusLoxodonta, fromAfrica. A 2009 study suggested thatLoxodonta exoptata gave rise toL. atlantica, which gave rise toL. africana.[1] Themolars ofL. exoptata are distinguished from later loxodonts by the lower plate number and their specializedenamel loops.[2] Fossil remains ofL. exoptata have been found atPliocene sites in eastern Africa includingHadar,Laetoli andKoobi Fora.[2]
