Long Island Recreation Park is aprotected area in the Australian state ofSouth Australia occupying the full extent of Long Island in theMurray River immediately east of the city ofMurray Bridge.[4]
The island forming the recreation park first received protected area status on 9 October 1958 as a recreation reserve proclaimed underCrown Lands Act 1929 and to be managed by theCorporate Town of Murray Bridge.[3] On 1 September 1966, it was proclaimed as a fauna sanctuary under theFauna Conservation Act, 1964-1965.[5] On 8 July 1976, the recreation reserve was resumed underCrown Lands Act 1929 and then proclaimed as theLong Island Recreation Park under theNational Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.[6][7]
As of 1980, it was reported as having "aesthetic and recreational value", as being arefuge forwaterfowl and as supporting "a dense forest of introducedwillow species with emergentEucalyptus camaldulensis".[8]
The recreation park is classified as anIUCNCategory III protected area. In 1980, the recreation park was listed on the formerRegister of the National Estate.[1][8]
