The hymn tune was used for several hymns in different languages, denominations and centuries.

History

[edit]

The text of "Lob Gott getrost mit Singen" was written by theBohemian Brethren,[1] in sixstanzas as a loose paraphrase of the LatinTe Deum. It has been arttibuted toJohann Horn [de] from Domascbitz near Leitmeritz in Bohemia, a bishop of the Brethren.[2] He published the song in a 1544 hymnal, with a 1532 melody which was originally secular, "Entlaubet ist der Walde".[2][3]

The hymn appears in the German ProtestanthymnalEvangelisches Gesangbuch as EG 243.[1][4] It is part of several other hymnals and songbooks.[1] The song was translated into English as "Praise God, praise God with singing", providing four stanzas.[5]

Tune and musical settings

[edit]

The tune was first secular, and appeared in 1532 with the text "Entlaubet ist der Walde".[3][6] It was first associated with a hymn in 1535 in Nürnberg.[3] Thehymn tune was also used for the hymn for Pentecost "O komm, du Geist der Wahrheit" byPhilipp Spitta.[3] In English, "Let me be Thine forever" is a translation ofNicolaus Selneccer's 1688 hymn "Lass mich dein sein und bleiben" (lit: Let me be Yours and remain it) byMatthias Loy.[7] Other hymns to the melody include "Through Jesus' Blood and Merit", a free translation ofSimon Dach's "Ich bin bei Gott in Gnaden", and "Redeemed, restored, forgiven" byHenry Williams Baker.[7] In German,Petronia Steiner wrote a Catholicoffertory hymn "Wir weihn der Erde Gaben" (We devote the gifts of the earth) to the tune in 1945.[8] In 1989, a few weeks before the fall of theBerlin Wall,Klaus-Peter Hertzsch, a pastor inEisenach, used the melody for a song for a wedding of a relative: "Vertraut den neuen Wegen" (Trust the new ways).[9]

Adam Gumpelzhaimer composed a four-partmotet.[10] Torsten Sterzik wrote a cantata, with the samecantus firmus but different vocal settings for the six stanzas, and two instrumental settings for winds. It was published byStrube-Verlag [de].[11]Johannes Petzold wrote a four-part setting in 1961, published byMerseburger Verlag [de] in 1963, and left sketches for other settings for both voices andorgan.[12] Michael Schopen composed achorale prelude for organ.[13]

Slightly paraphrased asLobt Gott getrost mit Singen, the beginning is the title of a songbook of 51 popular songs fromEvangelisches Gesangbuch, intended for use in services and especially senior citizens' homes.[14][15]
