Name and vicinity

[edit]

The station's name is taken from the area along theHudson Waterfront, with theHudson River to the east, which in turn was named for theLincoln Tunnel to the west. It is situated in the shadow of theLincoln Tunnel Helix, which crosses the bluff at the end of theHudson Palisades and descends in a circle to theart decotoll plaza andportals. To the east lies commercial and residential district, partially redeveloped byHartz Mountain Industries,[6][7][8] which had acquired theErie Railroad yards that had once predominated the area north ofWeehawken Cove in 1981.[9] In 2011, it announced that it would continue residential development with the construction of three rental apartment buildings adjacent to the station to open in 2013.[9] Erie's Pier D and Piershed is a remnant of the rail era listed on theNew Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1984,[10] and is now used asoffice space. While most of the route is atgrade, just north of the station a bridge carries trains over a busy intersection at the foot of King's Bluff.[citation needed]

The municipal athletic fields ofWeehawken Recreation Park are to the northeast, and north of that,Weehawken Port Imperial. TheHudson River Waterfront Walkway runs along the shore of theNorth River, providing access to the water's edge andmarinas forrecreational boating, andNew York Waterway ferries to theWest Midtown Ferry Terminal.UBS,[11]Swatch Group USA,[12]Hartz Mountain[13] Telx (colocation center)[14][15] are among the corporations which maintain offices in the neighborhood, which also hosts aSheraton Hotel.[16]
