Approximate distribution of Limousin within theOccitan area |
Limousin (French name, pronounced[limuzɛ̃]ⓘ;Occitan:lemosin, pronounced[lemuˈzi]) is a dialect of theOccitan language, spoken in the threedepartments ofLimousin, parts ofCharente and theDordogne in the southwest ofFrance.
The first Occitan documents are in an early form of this dialect, particularly theBoecis, written around the year 1000.
Limousin is used primarily by people over age 50 in rural communities. All speakers speakFrench as a first or second language. Due to theFrench single language policy, it is not recognised by the government and therefore consideredendangered by the linguistic community. Arevivalist movement around theFélibrige and theInstitut d'Estudis Occitans is active in Limousin (as well as in other parts ofOccitania).
Most speakers and linguists consider Limousin to be a variety of Occitan. For more detailed information on this question, see the section onOccitan dialects andcodification.
As a comparison of Limousin and Languedocien in written form, the following reproduces the first article of theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
