Lanthanosuchoidea is anextinctsuperfamily ofankyramorphparareptiles from the middlePennsylvanian to the middleGuadalupianepoch (Moscovian[1] -Wordian stages) ofEurope,North America andAsia.[2] It was named by the Russian paleontologistIvachnenko in 1980, and it contains two familiesAcleistorhinidae andLanthanosuchidae.[3]
Lanthanosuchoidea is anode-based taxon defined in 1997 as "the most recent common ancestor ofLanthanosuchus,Lanthaniscus, andAcleistorhinus".[3] Thecladogram below follows the topology from a 2011 analysis by Rutaet al.[2]

However, the phylogenetic analysis conducted by Cisneroset al. (2021) did not recover a clade uniting lanthanosuchids and acleistorhinids to the exclusion of all other parareptiles. Instead, acleistorhinids were recovered as thesister group of the cladeProcolophonia, while lanthanosuchids were recovered within the procolophonian subgroupPareiasauromorpha.[5]
