Lanthaniscus is anextinctgenus oflanthanosuchoidankyramorphparareptile known from theGuadalupianepoch (LateRoadian to latestWordian age) ofEastern Europe,Russia.[1]Lanthaniscus was first named by M. F. Ivakhnenko in1980 and thetype species isLanthaniscus efremovi.L. efremovi was originally described on the basis of theholotype PIN 3706/9 from Peza-1 locality,Krasnoshchel' Formation, ofArkhangelsk.[2] Various authors had assigned it to the familyLanthanosuchidae;[3][4] however, Ivakhnenko, who described an additional specimen ofL. efremovi in 2008, assignedLanthaniscus to its own family, the Lanthaniscidae. The additional specimen PIN 4543/2, was collected from the same formation as the holotype, from the Nisogora locality, which is slightly younger in age.[2]
