Lake Nona is a 17-square-mile (11,000-acre; 44 km2; 4,400 ha) mixed-useplanned community within the city limits ofOrlando, southeast ofOrlando International Airport. Being developed by Lake Nona Property Holdings (owned byTavistock Group), the Lake Nona Region is home toLake Nona Golf & Country Club.
The community is named for a large lake in the northern part.
The population of Lake Nona has grown from merely 1,500 in 2000 to over 50,000 people in 2015.[1][2] Some of the population growth is attributable to immigration from Puerto Rico during thePuerto Rican government-debt crisis of 2015.[3]
Lake Nona Medical City contains several centers forbiomedical research and education including theUniversity of Central Florida College of Medicine and the site of the planned relocation of theCollege of Nursing,[4] as well as the addition of theUniversity of Central Florida College of Dental Medicine,[5] and theUniversity of Florida College of Pharmacy, which is ranked #5 among all pharmacy schools in the nation.[6][7] Several other private, governmental, and educational medical centers are located in the area as well.
The city of Orlando has officially divided Lake Nona into four neighborhoods[citation needed]:
A fifth neighborhood, Education Village (formerly Narcoossee Groves), lies outside the original borders of Lake Nona. Lake Nona High School and theValencia College Lake Nona Campus are located here.
German aviation companyLilium plans to open one of itsvertiports, the first one in USA, in Lake Nona. It's planned to be finished 2025. The company is building 6-seater electric air taxis with the ability to vertically take off.[8][9]
