La Pobla de Segur (Catalan pronunciation:[laˈpoβlaðeseˈɣu]) is amunicipality located in thecomarca ofPallars Jussà,province of Lleida,Catalonia, in northernSpain. According to the 2013 census (INE), the town has a population of 3,073 inhabitants. It is situated at the confluence of theFlamicell andNoguera Pallaresa rivers in the north of thecomarca, above the Sant Antonireservoir. It is an important local service centre, which has allowed it to escape thedepopulation which has affected many municipalities in northwestern Catalonia. The village is served by theC-13 road betweenTremp andSort, theN-260 road toPont de Suert and by a railway station on arailway line to Lleida.
Famous people from La Pobla de Segur includeFC Barcelona playerCarles Puyol and formerHigh Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security PolicyJosep Borrell. It is a designatedbook town, due to the high number of bookshops in the vicinity.[4]
The earliest settlement in the area was to the north of the present town, known asEl Pui de Segur. It was incorporated into thecounty of Pallars after CountGuillaume I of Toulouse conquered the region from theMoors in the ninth century. The town was transferred to its current location in the middle of the thirteenth century, and came under the control ofPere VII el Donzell, Viscount ofVilamur, in 1355. His sonPere VIII granted the first charter to the town in 1363. Control would later pass to the Dukes ofCardona.
TheComú de Particulars is a localcooperative, established in 1834 to manage a flour mill given to the town by the Duke of Cardona; open to natives of the town or their spouses, it is now a cultural organisation managing the income from the localhydroelectric power station. TheTorre Maure is a notable group ofmodernista buildings from the start of the twentieth century.
