LIM domain kinase 1 is anenzyme that in humans is encoded by theLIMK1gene.[5][6]

Function

[edit]

There are approximately 40 known eukaryotic LIM proteins, so named for theLIM domains they contain. LIM domains are highly conservedcysteine-rich structures containing 2zinc fingers. Although zinc fingers usually function by binding toDNA orRNA, the LIM motif probably mediatesprotein-protein interactions. LIM kinase-1 and LIM kinase-2 belong to a small subfamily with a unique combination of 2N-terminal LIM motifs, a centralPDZ domain, and aC-terminalprotein kinase domain. LIMK1 is likely to be a component of an intracellular signaling pathway and may be involved in brain development.[7]

Clinical significance

[edit]

LIMK1hemizygosity is implicated in the impaired visuospatial constructive cognition ofWilliams syndrome.[7]
