Lübars (German pronunciation:[ˈlyːbaʁs]ⓘ) is a German locality (Ortsteil) within theborough (Bezirk) ofReinickendorf,Berlin.
First mentioned in 1247, it was an autonomous municipality merged into Berlin in 1920 with the "Greater Berlin Act". As a part ofWest Berlin borderingEast Germany, Lübars was crossed, from 1961 to 1989, by theBerlin Wall, built beyond theTegeler Creek (Tegeler Fließ). Famous was the "Checkpoint Qualitz", a point of the wall named after Helmut Qualitz, a farmer from Lübars, who broke it on 16 June 1990 with histractor.[2]
Situated in the north of Berlin and partially included in the area ofBarnim Nature Park,[3] Lübars includes the small lakes ofZiegeleisee,Klötzbecken and part ofHermsdorfer See. TheTegeler Fließ separates Lübars from theBrandenburger municipalities, both in theOberhavel district, ofGlienicke/Nordbahn andMühlenbecker Land (with its municipal seat ofSchildow). The Berliner bordering localities areHermsdorf,Waidmannslust,Wittenau,Märkisches Viertel,Blankenfelde andRosenthal (both in thePankow district). Lübars' principal recreation park is theeponymous one, situated in its southwestern corner.
