Kontinent was an émigrédissidentjournal which focused on the politics of theSoviet Union and its satellites. Founded in 1974 by writerVladimir Maximov,[1][2][3][4] its first editor-in-chief, it was published inGerman andRussian and later translated intoEnglish. ANorwegian edition,Kontinent Skandinavia [no], was published from 1979 to 1981.

This initial issue featured adebate betweenAndrei Sakharov andAleksandr Solzhenitsyn regarding Solzhenitsyn'sLetter to the Soviet Leaders (q:ru:Письмо вождям Советского Союза[5]).
Kontinent continues to be published in English and Russian byRussia House. Currently, the editorial is located at Moscow,registered in the committee on the printed materials of the Russian federation, registration license no. 014255.[citation needed] The Russian version has been available online since 1999.[6]
