Kon Tum shares borders withLaos andCambodia. It has an area of 9,677.30 km2 (3,736.43 sq mi)[1] and a population of approximately 530,000. The economy is primarily agricultural.
The name Kon Tum comes from the name of a village of theBahnar ethnic group. In theBahnar language,kon means "village" andtum means "pool". Prior to the adoption of theVietnamese alphabet in the 1920s, the name was rendered as崑嵩.
The southern border withGia Lai follows theSê San river up toYali Falls Dam, as well as part of the Dak Bla, Dak Pokei and Dak Poe rivers. TheSa Thầy River, a tributary of the Sê San, also runs through the province.[4]
The province is primarily located in the Sê San river basin, though parts are also in the headwaters of theVu Gia,Trà Khúc andSekong Rivers.
