To the east is astrait, first calledSnævringen ("The Narrowing") and then further southBredningen ("The Broadening"), that separates the Jutland mainland from the island ofFunen in this area, where the two lie very close to each other, often less than 1.5 km apart.Snævringen is an extension of theKattegat, and begins near the cities ofFredericia andMiddelfart, north and east of Kolding municipality. AsSnævringen broadens it becomesBredningen, which opens out into theLittle Belt (Lillebælt), the main strait between Jutland and Funen. The municipality ofMiddelfart on the other side ofSnævringen is thus Kolding's municipal neighbor to the east. The island ofFænø lies inSnævringen between Kolding and Middelfart.
Leading directly into the city of Kolding fromSnævringen are the waters ofKolding Fjord.
