TheKhasyn (Russian:Хасын) is a river inMagadan Oblast,Russian Far East, a tributary of theArman. It is 115 kilometres (71 mi) long, with adrainage basin of 3,900 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).[1] TheR504 Kolyma Highway runs by the riverside along a 40 km (25 mi) long stretch.[2]
The name of the river originated in theEven language word"Khesen", meaning "herd".[3]
The river has its source in theKolyma Mountains, 15 km (9.3 mi) to the north ofKaramken at an elevation of about 800 metres (2,600 ft).[4] It flows initially southwards with manyrapids across a mountainous area, bending subsequently to the SSW and holding that direction until its mouth. Finally the Khasyn joins the left bank of theArman 12 km (7.5 mi) from its mouth in theSea of Okhotsk.[5]
Besides of the abandoned village of Karamken, the settlements ofPalatka,Khasyn,Stekolny andSplavnaya are located by the banks of the river. Magadan'sSokol Airport is located 8 km (5.0 mi) to the east of the river.[2]
The main tributaries of the Khasyn are the 55 km (34 mi) long Nelkandzha (Nyulkandzha) and the 42 km (26 mi) long Chalbyga from the right, as well as the 50 km (31 mi) long Uptar that joins it from the left.[5] The Khasyn is frozen between October and May.[3] The river is not navigable.
The river is a spawning ground forsalmon, both freshwater and anadromous, such as thecoho salmon. Other fish species in the river aregrayling andDolly Varden char.[3]
