Kaba is anAlbanianmusic genre, a folkinstrumental expression of theAlbanian Iso-Polyphony, which is recognized ascultural heritage byUNESCO.[1][2]
The Albanian kaba is performed with a soloist playing theclarinet orviolin, accompanied by the instrumental ensembles calledsaze playinglla(h)uta (saz orlute) and other instruments. The musical features of the kaba vary according to the ethnocultural and musical regions of southernAlbania.[3]
Kaba evolved as an instrumental expression of theAlbanian Iso-Polyphony, which is considered to have its roots in the many-voicedvajtim, the southernAlbanian traditional lamentation of the dead.[3]
Among the most influential and best performers of the Albaniankaba are clarinetistsLaver Bariu andRemzi Lela,[4] and violinistEthem Qerimaj.[5]
