Josep Sastre Perciba (25 June 1906 – 2 June 1962) was a Spanishfootballer who played as a midfielder andforward. He was best known for his stint withBarcelona in the 1920s and 30s.
Born inGràcia, he began his career atFC España, a club that in 1923 adopted the name FC Gràcia. His brilliant performances at FC Gràcia eventually drew the attention ofBarcelona who signed him in 1926, with whom he played for the next 6 years, scoring 116 goals in 167 matches.[1] In 1928, Sastre played in theinfamous Copa del Rey final between Barcelona andReal Sociedad atEl Sardinero, a final that needed 3 matches to be decided because the first two ended in 1–1 draws. In the third match, Sastre scored in a 3–1 win that gave the title to Barça.[2][3] Sastre scored the first ever goal in aDerbi barceloní, as Barcelona beatEspanyol 1–0 on 7 April 1929.[4] He was part of the Barcelona team that won the first-everLa Liga title in 1929. He also helped the club win fiveCampionat de Catalunya, including three back-to-back title between 1929 and 1932.
In 1932 he signed forEspanyol, but was unable to play many games after undergoing astomach surgery.[5] Once he recovered, however, he returned to Barcelona in 1933, and once he resigned he moved to Granollers SC,[6] toClub Français inParis,[7]CF Badalona and ended his career atTerrassa FC.[8] After he retired, he coached several Catalan teams, includingGirona.
Sastre made one appearance with theSpain national football team in a 1–0 win overCzechoslovakia on 1 January 1930, scoring his side's game winning goal on his debut.[9][10]
Like many otherBarcelona players at the time, Sastre was summoned to play several matches for theCatalan national team during the 1920s and 1930s, however, due to the little statistical rigor that the newspapers had at that time, the exact amount of caps he earned and goals he scored is uncertain. Together withPaulino Alcántara,Josep Samitier andRicardo Zamora, he was part of the great Catalan side of the twenties that wonthe last edition of thePrince of Asturias Cup, an inter-regional competition organized by theRFEF.[11] On 15 May 1927, Sastre netted ahat-trick in afriendly against theCentro team (a Castile/Madrid XI) in a 3–0 win atLes Corts.[citation needed] In the following game a month later, on 16 June, he went one better with four goals against aBrussels XI at the same venue.[12]
