Josef Karl Franz Otto Geitler, Ritter von Armingen (14 September 1870 – 20 June 1923) was an Austrianphysicist born inSmíchov, today a district inPrague. He is remembered for his investigations ofelectromagnetic waves.
He studied inPrague andBonn, later obtaining hishabilitation at Prague. In 1906 he succeededAlois Handl (1837-1915) as chair ofexperimental physics at theUniversity of Czernowitz. In 1919, when Czernowitz became a Romanian university, Geitler relocated toGraz, where he taught classes at theTechnische Universität Graz.
Among his scientific research were studies that explained differences betweenx-rays andcathode rays.[1] His best known publication wasElektromagnetische Schwingungen und Wellen, ("Electromagneticoscillations and waves") (1905).[2]
He was a cousin to physicistHeinrich Hertz (1857-1894). Among his students at Czernowitz wasWojciech Rubinowicz (1889-1974).
