Jordan King (born 26 February 1994 inWarwick) is a Britishracing driver. He is currently the reserve driver for theMahindra Formula E Team, for whom he made his Formula E debut at the2024 Berlin ePrix.[1]

Previously, King has been a race winner in theGP2 Series and theLMP2 class of theWEC, as well as racing in theIndyCar Series. He is also the 2013 champion of theBritish F3 International Series.

Personal life

He attendedRepton School in Derbyshire on aC. B. Fry scholarship and laterPrincethorpe College in Warwickshire. King is the son of formerSainsbury's CEOJustin King.[2]

King is also an avid fundraiser forBirmingham Children's Hospital, having raised over £8,500 in 2019 while cycling theNorth Coast 500.[3] In 2020, he ran the 84-mileHadrian's Wall Path to continue his fundraising efforts.

In 2024 he ran the London Marathon raising over £16,900 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital and completing the marathon in 2:58.

King also manages the career of 2024Euro 4 ChampionAkshay Bohra

Career

Formula Renault 2.0 UK

King's early racing career began inkarting before he moved toopen-wheel racing at the end of 2010. He began driving inFormula Renault UK, starting in theFormula Renault UK Winter Series before he began the main championship in2011.

FIA Formula Two Championship

In 2009, aged only fifteen, King tested aFormula Two car. He drove four races inFormula Palmer Audi at the Silverstone round in 2010, managing to get a podium and impressing series bossJonathan Palmer. In2011, he has signed up for three rounds of the Formula Two championship,[4][5] atSpa-Francorchamps, theNürburgring andBrands Hatch during the Formula Renault UK summer break. King will be the youngest driver to take part in the modern era of the series.

GP2 Series

In February 2015, it was confirmed King would move up toGP2, signing withRacing Engineering, alongsideAlexander Rossi, for2015, where he finished twelfth overall.[6] He remained with the team for thefollowing season, where he claimed two victories and finished seventh overall.

FIA Formula 2 Championship

In2017, King switched toMP Motorsport for a third season of the sport.[7]

For2019, King returned with the same team partnered with Indian driverMahaveer Raghunathan. King missed theMonaco round due to his participation in the2019 Indianapolis 500, withArtem Markelov serving as his substitute. King scored two podium finishes during the season, claiming the 3rd position in the feature race atBaku and 2nd in the sprint race atMonza. He finished ninth in the standings.

King holds two F2 track records, both set in 2017, atCircuit de Spa-Francorchamps andAutodromo Nazionale di Monza.

Formula One

King was signed as a development driver by theManor Marussia team for the2015 season, being retained by the squad, renamedManor Racing, in2016.[8] He made his debut in a Formula One session when he drove for Manor during free practice at the2016 United States Grand Prix.[9]

Since 2020, King has been a development driver for theAlpine F1 Team.[10]

IndyCar Series

In2018, King signed withEd Carpenter Racing as a part-time driver in the No. 20 car, sharing driving duties with ownerEd Carpenter. Carpenter started the ovals, while King started the 11 road and street circuit races. In hisIndyCar Series debut, the season openingFirestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, he set the track record in qualifying, made the Firestone Fast 6 and took the lead of the race on only the fifth lap. His second Fast 6 appearance came at theIndianapolis Motor Speedway during qualifications for theINDYCAR Grand Prix. He also paced the field during the only international stop in 2018, theHonda Indy Toronto. King advanced out of the first round of qualifications in half of the possible races over the course of the season.

King returned to Indy car racing in2019 to make hisIndianapolis 500 debut withRahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The2019 Indianapolis 500 was his first-ever oval race. He successfully qualified his No. 42 on the first day, locking in the 26th starting position.[11]

FIA World Endurance Championship

King also made his debut in prototype racing in 2019. He signed withJackie Chan DC Racing x Jota for the1000 Miles of Sebring, the 6th round of the2018-19 Super Season. King secured the LMP2 victory in his first endurance race[12] and subsequently finished the season with the team. He competed in his first24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

King has competed in two rounds of the2019-20 Super Season withTeam LNTGinetta Cars in the LMP1 class.[13]

Formula E

King first testedFormula E machinery twice, firstly in 2016-17 withMahindra Racing,[14] and again in a private test withDragon Racing in 2019.[15] In February 2021, it was announced that King would be taking on a sim and development driver role at Mahindra.[14] In April 2023, King would participate in theBerlin rookies' driver test with the team.[16]
