Jon Ola Hauger Norbom (15 December 1923 – 12 April 2020) was a Norwegian economist and politician.

Biography

DuringWorld War II, in 1942, Norbom was imprisoned for a brief time atGrini concentration camp. Then, in November 1943, he was among the students who were arrested by theGerman occupying forces in Norway as part of a general imprisonment of all male, non-NS students at theUniversity of Oslo. He was imprisoned in the German concentration campBuchenwald.[1]

From 1950 to 1952, he was the leader of theYoung Liberals of Norway, the youth wing of the Liberal Party. He wasState Secretary in theMinistry of Finance from 1967 to 1969, duringBorten's cabinet, and becameMinister of Finance from 1972 to 1973 during theKorvald's cabinet. Norbom never held elected political office.[2]

He graduated ascand.oecon. from theUniversity of Oslo in 1949, and studied international economics andEuropean integration at theCollege of Europe inBruges from 1952 to 1953. He subsequently worked as a researcher with theNational Bureau of Economic Research, theUnited Nations and theGeneral Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) during the 1950s and 1960s. He was director in the International Trade Centre Unctad/Gatt from 1973 to 1984, the Permanent Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Social Affairs from 1984 to 1993, and member of the United Nations Social Policy Committee from 1987 to 1990.[2]

Norbom died inSuwanee, Georgia on 12 April 2020, aged 96.[3]
