Joseph "Joju" George (born 22 October 1977), is an Indian actor,playback singer,director andproducer who primarily works inMalayalam cinema along withTamil, andTelugu cinemas.

In 2015, he won theKerala State Film Award – Special Mention for his supporting roles inOru Second Class Yathra andLukka Chuppi. His filmJoseph got special mention in66th National Film Awards. He is a recipient of more than 20 awards, awarded for either his acting or production.

In 2015, he stepped into film production and produced films such asCharlie andUdaharanam Sujatha before successfully launching his own production house Appu Pathu Pappu Production, which has produced several of his films.

Early life

Joju was born inMala,Thrissur, Kerala on 22 October 1977 to George Parecattil and Rosy George. He completed his schooling from GHS,Kuzhur and then studied at theChrist College, Irinjalakuda before commencing his career in the film industry as a junior artist in 1995 and then as anassistant director in 1997.

Film career

Joju debuted as an actor in the 1995 filmMazhavilkoodaram as ajunior artist. This was followed by several minor roles in the late 1990s and 2000s. In the 2010s, he gradually shifted to playing supporting roles. In 2015, he won his firstKerala State Film Award (Special Mention) for his supporting roles in the filmsOru Second Class Yathra,Yathra Chodikkathe andLukka Chuppi. His breakthrough came when he played the leading role in the 2018 filmJoseph, directed byM. Padmakumar, in which he played a retiredpolice officer investigating a personal case while fightingdemons of his own. The film received a special mention in theNational Film Awards that year and Joju received his secondKerala State Film Award, this time forBest Character Actor for Joseph and the filmChola. In 2021, he was awarded at the 3rd Diorama International Film Festival under the category of Best Actor for his performance inNayattu.[1] He was the first Malayali to win the award. Since then, he has played several leading roles in films suchPorinju Mariam Jose,Halal Love Story,Jagame Thanthiram,Pada, andAviyal. He received praise for his performances in the filmsNayattu,Madhuram andFreedom Fight for which he won the award forBest Actor that year at the Kerala State Film Awards. In the sam year, he debuted inTamil cinema alongsideDhanush in the filmJagame Thandhiram, directed byKarthik Subbaraj, which was released onNetflix. His second Tamil release was the Anthology seriesPutham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa, anAmazon Original.

In addition to acting, he has produced 6 films under his production house includingCharlie (2015),Joseph (2018) (in which he also played the lead role in),Chola (2019),Porinju Mariam Jose (2019) andMadhuram (2021). He has been credited as a playback singer, having sung in his own filmJoseph.

Personal life

Joju married Abba in 2008, and has three children; Ian, Sarah and Ivan.[2]
