John Welch (born February 17, 1963) is an American professionalbasketball coach and former player who is theassociate head coach atFresno State. He previously served as assistant coach for theLos Angeles Clippers of theNational Basketball Association (NBA). He played professionally inNew Zealand where in1988, he earnedMost Outstanding Guard andAll-Star Five honors playing forWaitemata. Throughout his coaching career, he has worked with or worked under various notable basketball people, includingJerry Tarkanian,Jerry West,Hubie Brown,George Karl andTim Grgurich.
Born inPortland, Maine, Welch attendedRancho High School inNorth Las Vegas, Nevada and was an All-State selection. He later played college basketball forNevada andUNLV before starting a successful coaching career.
AtFresno State, Welch worked under head coachJerry Tarkanian, a 2013Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach inductee.
Welch worked underGeorge Karl during his tenure with theDenver Nuggets.[1] Karl expressed his appreciation towards Welch, saying, "he's got great passion ... [and] tries something every day that we can get better at."[2]
Welch began his tenure with the Nets in 2013, the first seasonJason Kidd was head coach.[3]
On July 31, 2015, Welch was hired by theSacramento Kings to be an assistant coach.[4]
On September 23, 2016, Welch was hired as an assistant coach by theLos Angeles Clippers,[5] and served in the position until November 16, 2020.[6]
On February 22, 2022, Welch was hired as the head coach of theOstioneros de Guaymas, a Mexican team in theCircuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico (CIBACOPA).[7]
On May 22, 2023, Welch was hired as an assistant coach by theKentucky Wildcats.
