John Milton "Jack" Gaver Jr. (September 17, 1940 – January 15, 2002) was an Americantrainer ofThoroughbred racehorses. He was the son ofNational Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame trainerJohn M. Gaver Sr., who was head trainer for theWhittney family'sGreentree Stable for 38 years.[1] In 1977 his father suffered astroke and John Jr. took over his responsibilities at Greentree where he would remain for the next fifteen years. For Greentree he trained back-to-backChampionsLate Bloomer in 1978 andBowl Game in 1979.[2]
Among his important wins, John Gaver Jr. won the most importantturf races at the time including the 1979Turf Classic Invitational Handicap[3] andWashington, D.C. International Stakes (Forerunner to theBreeders' Cup),[4] and in 1981 theRothmans International Stakes.[5]
John Gaver Jr. died at age 61 inHollywood, Florida where he had been working as a track steward. He was buried in theLexington Cemetery inLexington, Kentucky.[6]
