John Kynton

English Franciscan friar and vice-chancellor

John Kynton (died 1536) was anEnglish 16th-centuryFranciscan friar,divinity professor, and avice-chancellor of theUniversity of Oxford.[1][2]

In 1500 Kynton graduated as aDoctor of Divinity at Oxford, where he was aMinorite orFriar Minor.[3] He was appointedVice-Chancellor of Oxford University as part of a committee several times annually during 1503–1513.[4]

Kynton was a seniortheologian at Oxford and preached the University sermon onEaster Sunday in 1515.[3] He was among the four Doctors of Divinity appointed by the University in 1521 to consult withThomas Wolsey aboutLutheran doctrines and he assisted in a further examination of the reformer's works undertaken by the theologians at Oxford on the command ofKing Henry VIII. He is believed to have written at this time a treatise entitled "Contra DoctrinamMart. Lutheri". He was thedivinity reader atMagdalen College, and thirdMargaret Professor of Theology at Oxford University. He resigned the latter post in 1530. In 1530, he was one of the leading members of the committee of Oxford theologians to whom the question of the validity of King Henry VIII's marriage toCatherine of Aragon was referred.[3]

Kynton died on 20 January 1536 (or 1535) and was buried in the chapel ofDurham College, nowTrinity College, Oxford.[3][5]
