John IX of Haugwitz (German:Johann IX. von Haugwitz, 29 Aug 1524 – 26 March 1595) wasBishop of Meissen from 1555 to 1559 or 1581.
John IX was born on 29 August 1524 inThalheim, Saxony in theOre Mountains ofSaxony. He came from theHaugwitz family, who held several high clerical offices. He was the last bishop of theBishopric of Meissen, which became aProtestant diocese in the wake of theProtestant Reformation.
On his appointment,John of Carlowitz, a relative of his predecessor began afeud over the inheritance of the episcopal estate. The so-called Pig War orSaukrieg lasted 3 years before it was resolved byElector Augustus.
He signed theFormula of Concord in 1577 and theBook of Concord in 1580.[1] In 1581, the bishop resigned from his office and converted to the Protestant faith. In 1559, he appointedJohann Leisentrit as theAdministrator of the remaining Roman Catholic areas. In 1582 he married his considerably younger niece, Agnes. After John's death, she married the Electoral Saxon Advisor (Rat) andAmtmann ofStolpen, Hans Georg von Wehse, and had four daughters from that marriage. Agnes was the heiress of the episcopal estate.
John IX died inMügeln on 26 March 1595; his gravestone is in the town church of Neu-Mügeln.
