Jesse Minter (born May 9, 1983) is anAmerican football coach who is thedefensive coordinator for theLos Angeles Chargers of theNational Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive coordinator at theUniversity of Michigan from 2022 to 2023.

Minter playedcollege football atMount St. Joseph University. He previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan,Vanderbilt University,Baltimore Ravens,Georgia State University,Indiana State University,University of Cincinnati and theUniversity of Notre Dame.

Early life and playing career

Minter was born on May 9, 1983, inLittle Rock, Arkansas.[1] He moved several times growing up due to his fatherRick Minter's career as a college coach, graduating fromYorktown High School inYorktown, Indiana.[2] He was a four-yearwide receiver atMount St. Joseph University from 2002 to 2005.[3][4]

Coaching career

Notre Dame

Minter began his coaching career atNotre Dame as a defensive intern for one season before going on toCincinnati as agraduate assistant.

Cincinnati

He left Cincinnati after two seasons to become the linebackers coach atIndiana State in 2009, working his way up to defensive coordinator.

Georgia State

Minter joinedGeorgia State in2012 as theirdefensive coordinator. During his time with Georgia State, he helped develop the Panthers defense to where they were eighth in theFootball Bowl Subdivision (FBS) pass defense in his final season with the team, while also earning aBroyles Award nomination.[5][6]

Baltimore Ravens

He departed Georgia State to join theBaltimore Ravens in2017 as a defensive assistant, where he worked with the defensive backs. He was promoted to defensive backs coach in2020.[7]

Vanderbilt

Minter was hired atVanderbilt in2021 as their defensive coordinator and safeties coach.[8][9]

Michigan

Minter was announced to be joining theUniversity of Michigan coaching staff as the Defensive Coordinator on February 9, 2022.[10]

In the wake ofJim Harbaugh's three game suspension to open the 2023 season, it was announced that Minter would serve as interim head coach for Michigan's first game of the season against East Carolina. On September 2, 2023, Minter led the Wolverines to a 30-3 victory over the Pirates, giving him his first official win as a head coach.[11]

Los Angeles Chargers

On February 6, 2024, Minter was hired by theLos Angeles Chargers as their defensive coordinator, following head coachJim Harbaugh.[12]

Personal life

Minter's father,Rick Minter, was the head football coach at theUniversity of Cincinnati and is currently a senior defensive analyst for the Los Angeles Chargers. Minter and his wife Rachelle have three children, Millie, Monte, and Mac.
