Jerome M. Beatty Jr. (December 9, 1916 – July 31, 2002) was a twentieth-centuryAmerican author ofchildren's literature. He was also an accomplishedfeature writer formagazines. Beatty served in theUnited States Army, achieving the rank ofcorporal, and is buried at theMassachusetts National Cemetery.
Arguably, Beatty's most popular works are theMatthew and Maria Looney books, ascience fictionseries for children. Matthew and Maria Looney are a brother and sister who live on theMoon, part of analien civilization of people who, as it turns out, are a lot like usEarthlings. Theseries was first published in the early 1960s, at the dawn of theSpace Age, and is clearly influenced by that era.
