Belgian meteorologist and amateur astronomer
Jean Meeus (born 12 December 1928) is a Belgianmeteorologist and amateurastronomer specializing incelestial mechanics, spherical astronomy, and mathematical astronomy.[1][2]
Meeus studied mathematics at theUniversity of Leuven inBelgium, where he received the Degree ofLicentiate in 1953. From then until his retirement in 1993, he was ameteorologist atBrussels Airport.[2]
In 1986, he won theAmateur Achievement Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.[3] Themain belt asteroid2213 Meeus was named after him by theInternational Astronomical Union in 1981 for his contributions to the field.[1][2]
