James K. Hoffmeier (born February 13, 1951) is anEgyptian-born AmericanOld Testamentscholar,archaeologist, andEgyptologist, specializing inbiblical archaeology,Near Eastern archaeology, andhistoricity of theHebrew Bible.[2] He served as Professor of Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern History and Archaeology atTrinity Evangelical Divinity School.[1]

Education and career

Hoffmeier graduated with aB.A. atWheaton College, followed by aM.A. andPh.D. at theUniversity of Toronto.[1]

During the period from 1975 to 1977, Hoffmeier worked on the Akhenaten Temple Project based inLuxor,Egypt.[1] He has been the Professor of Archaeology and Old Testament at Wheaton College.[1] He was director of excavations atTell el-Borg,Sinai Peninsula from 1998 to 2008.[1] Additionally he is often called upon as a consultant for television programs made for theHistory,Discovery,Learning, andNational Geographic Channels.[1]

Hoffmeier has written articles published inacademic journals specialized in the field ofEgyptology, including theJournal of the American Research Center in Egypt,Journal of Egyptian Archaeology,Revue d'Égyptologie, andÄgypten und Levante.[1] He served as a contributor for theOxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, theAnchor Bible Dictionary, and theNew International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis.[1] He served as an archaeological editor for theEnglish Standard Version Study Bible and has authored several books onbiblical archaeology.[1] Hoffmeier is abiblical maximalist and has often published works which defend thehistoricity of theHebrew Bible.[3][4]
