Jagoba Arrasate Elustondo (born 22 April 1978) is a Spanish formerfootballer who played as aforward, currentlymanager ofLa Liga clubMallorca.

After an amateur playing career, he rose through the coaching ranks ofReal Sociedad where he made hisLa Liga debut in 2013, also leadingOsasuna in the top flight and taking the latter club to theSegunda División title in2019.

Playing career

Born inBerriatua,Biscay, Arrasate only played for lower league clubs during his ten-year senior career, the majority in theTercera División and all in his nativeBasque Country. In theSegunda División B, he representedEibar B andPortugalete, being relegated with the latter team at the end of the2005–06 campaign.[2]

Arrasate retired in 2007 at only 29, afterone season in the fourth tier withAmorebieta.[3]

Coaching career

Real Sociedad

Arrasate became a coach immediately after retiring, his first two clubs being amateur. In 2010, he returned toReal Sociedad where he had been groomed, being appointed coach of theyouth teams.[4]

In July 2012, Arrasate was promoted to Real's first team as assistant toPhilippe Montanier.[5] The following year, as the Frenchman left forRennes, he was named his successor.[6] He debuted inLa Liga on 17 August with a 2–0 home win againstGetafe,[7] and led the team in theircampaign in theUEFA Champions League, in which they defeatedLyon to qualify for the group stage for the first time in a decade,[4] but finished bottom ofthe table.[8]

In April 2014, after having taken Real tothe semi-finals of theCopa del Rey where they lost 3–1 on aggregate toBarcelona, Arrasate had his contract renewed until 2016.[9] He was sacked on 2 November after a 3–1 loss toKrasnodar in theplay-off round of theUEFA Europa League, followed by one win from ten at the start of theleague season.[10]

Numancia

Arrasate was appointed at the helm ofNumancia on 12 June 2015, replacingJuan Antonio Anquela.[11] On his debut on 23 August, the team won 6–3 at home toTenerife on the first day of thesecond-division season;[12] towards the end of a 10th-place finish he was rewarded with one more season in the job.[13]

In June 2017, despitefinishing 17th – then the joint worst in Numancia'sSegunda history – Arrasate received another extension at theNuevo Estadio Los Pajaritos.[14] Inthe ensuing season he led theSorians to the finals ofthe play-offs, but missed out promotion after a 4–1 aggregate loss toReal Valladolid; he stepped down on 18 June 2018.[15]

Osasuna

On 20 June 2018, Arrasate was namedOsasuna manager after agreeing to a one-year contract.[16] He renewed his contract until 2020 the following 5 March,[17] andachieved promotion to La Liga as champions.[18]

Arrasate signed another new deal on 18 November 2019, tying him to theRojillos until June 2022.[19] Six days later the team lost 2–1 at home to local rivalsAthletic Bilbao, ending a club-best 602 days unbeaten at theEl Sadar Stadium.[20]

On 7 March 2022, Arrasate's contract was extended for two more years, with the news being broken through a banner on the Avenida Carlos III inPamplona.[21] In theensuing season, he led Osasuna to theSpanish Cup final for the first time in 18 years after a 2–1extra-time win at home toSevilla in the quarter-finals[22] and a 2–1 aggregate defeat of Athletic in the next round;[23] they lost thedecisive match 2–1 toReal Madrid.[24][25] In the domestic league, a seventh-place finish meantqualification for theUEFA Europa Conference League in a return to Europe for the first time in 16 years.[26]

On 10 June 2024, Arrasate was appointed at fellow top-tierMallorca on a three-year deal.[27][28]

Personal life

On 12 August 2020, Arrasate tested positive forCOVID-19.[29] As of 2023, he had three children.[30]
