The modern constellationIndus is not included in theThree Enclosures andTwenty-Eight Mansions system of traditionalChinese uranography because its stars are too far south for observers in China to know about them prior to the introduction of Western star charts. Based on the work ofXu Guangqi and the German Jesuit missionaryJohann Adam Schall von Bell in the lateMing Dynasty,[1] this constellation has been classified as one of the 23Southern Asterisms (近南極星區,Jìnnánjíxīngōu) under the namePersia (波斯,Bōsī).
The name of the western constellation in modern Chinese is 印第安座 (yìn dì ān zuò), meaning "the Indian constellation".
