Hoa Xuan Nguyen,[2] known professionally asHoa Xuande (/hoʊˈɑːʃɔːnˈdeɪ/[3]), is anAustralian actor ofVietnamese descent. He is best known for his role as Lin in the 2021 live action remake ofCowboy Bebop and as the Captain in the 2024HBO/A24 television seriesThe Sympathizer.
Xuande is of Vietnamese descent.[4] He studied acting atWestern Australian Academy of Performing Arts.[5] Xuande attended school atTrinity Grammar inMelbourne.[6]
In his early career, Xuande appeared in productions in Australia. From 2016 to 2017, Xuande portrayed Elvin in the AustralianABC comedy seriesRonny Chieng: International Student,[7] alongsideRonny Chieng,Molly Daniels,Shuang Hu, Patch May andAnthony Morgan.
In 2020 he portrayed Khoa in theSBS seriesHungry Ghosts.[8] He portrayed Lin in the 2021 live action remake ofCowboy Bebop.[9][10]
In 2022, Xuande was announced as the lead, the Captain, in the 2024HBO/A24historicalblack comedydrama television seriesThe Sympathizer.[11] The miniseries is an adaptation of the2015 novel of the same name written by AmericanViet Thanh Nguyen. The series premiered onHBO in April 2024. For his performance as the Captain, Xuande was nominated for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series, theGotham Award for Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series and theSatellite Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film.[12][13][14]
