The station opened on 1 August 1892. With the privatization ofJapanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Hokkaido.
Higashi-Muroran Station became fullyaccessible on 1 March 2008 following a renovation of the station building.[1]
