TheHers-Mort (French pronunciation:[ɛʁsmɔʁ];Occitan:Èrs Mòrt; the "Dead Hers", as opposed to the faster-flowingHers-Vif, or "Live Hers") is a 89.3-kilometre (55.5 mi) long river in southern France,[a] a right-bank tributary of theGaronne.[1] Its average flow rate is 4 cubic metres per second (140 cu ft/s). The Hers-Mort rises in theLauragais region, near the villageFonters-du-Razès, in theAude department. It flows northwest through the following departments and towns:
It flows into the Garonne nearGrenade-sur-Garonne. Its waters, augmented by the Girou which flows into its right bank, irrigate the market gardens aroundToulouse. TheCanal du Midi crosses the Hers-Mort nearVillefranche-de-Lauragais via theHers Aqueduct.
