Herbert Doyan Welch Jr. (born January 12, 1961) is an American former professionalfootballsafety in theNational Football League (NFL) for theNew York Giants,Washington Redskins, andDetroit Lions. He also played in theWorld League of American Football (WLAF) for theSacramento Surge. Welch playedcollege football at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles and was selected in the twelfth round of the1985 NFL draft.[1]

On December 10, 1986, he replaced the injuredTerry Kinard as theNew York Giants' startingfree safety for the remainder of thatSuper Bowl-winning season.[2]
