Henry Patten (born 6 May 1996) is a British professionaltennis player who specialises in doubles. He has beenranked by theATP as high as world No. 3 in doubles, achieved on 27 January 2025. Patten is a two-timeGrand Slam champion in doubles, having won the2024 Wimbledon Championships and the2025 Australian Open withHarri Heliövaara.
He has won five career doubles titles on theATP Tour and also 13ATP Challenger titles, 11 withJulian Cash. Ten of the titles came in 2022, a record for the most Challenger doubles titles accrued in a single season.[2][3]
He also attained his career-high singles ranking of world No. 462 in September 2022.
Patten was born on 6 May 1996 inManningtree, Essex, England. He attendedIpswich School andCulford School, before he enrolled at theUniversity of North Carolina at Asheville, where he played collegiate tennis.[4] He continued his postgraduate studies atDurham University (2019–2020).[5][6] During two of his university summer breaks, he worked forIBM as a courtside statistician atWimbledon.[7][8]
Patten is a member of theRoehampton Club.[9] He is also a chess enthusiast, often playing the game while on tour.[10][11]
While at UNC Asheville, Patten became the No. 1 rankedNCAA doubles player and placed as high as No. 32 in singles.[10] In 2018 he was the first player in the history of his program to be selected for the singles draw of theNCAA Men's Tennis Championships.[12] At Durham he finished runner-up with Josip Krstanovic to fellow Durham studentsJulius Tverijonas and Or Ram-Harel in the 2019BUCS Men's Doubles Championship.[13]
Patten won ten titles in 2022, breaking the record for mostChallenger doubles titles in a single season withJulian Cash.[2]
Patten partnering withJulian Cash reached his first ATP final at the2023 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, losing toJordan Thompson andMax Purcell in a deciding champions tiebreak.[14] He reached the top 50 on 22 May 2023.
In April, Patten won his maiden ATP title at theGrand Prix Hassan II partnering with new partnerHarri Heliövaara, defeating second seeded Austrian duo ofAlexander Erler andLucas Miedler.[15][16] In May, Patten and Heliövaara defeated top seedsAndreas Mies andNeal Skupski in the final of theTurin Challenger.[17] Patten won his second title at theLyon Open partnering also with Heliövaara. The duo defeatedAlbano Olivetti andYuki Bhambri in the final.[18]
Patten and Heliövaara reached the final atWimbledon, defeating Italian duoAndrea Vavassori andSimone Bolelli, Spanish duoPedro Martínez andJaume Munar, and thenMarcelo Arévalo andMate Pavić in the quarterfinals,[19][20] Neal Skupski andMichael Venus in the semifinals.[21][22] They defeated Australian duoJordan Thompson andMax Purcell in the final, in a three-setter with three tiebreaks, saving three match points, to win their first Grand Slam title together.[23][24][25][26] As a result he moved 25 positions up to a new career-high doubles ranking of world No. 17 on 15 July 2024 and to the top 15 three weeks later on 5 August 2024.[citation needed]
Seeded sixth at theUS Open, Patten and Heliovaara reached the third round with a win overFlavio Cobolli andDominic Stricker,[27] before losing to 11th seedsWesley Koolhof andNikola Mektić.[28]
Patten made his debut for the Great BritainDavis Cup team against Canada in Manchester, England, on 15 September, teaming withNeal Skupski to defeatGabriel Diallo andAlexis Galarneau in a dead rubber after the tie was already lost following wins for the Canadians in both singles matches.[29][30]
Patten and Heliovaara were runners-up at theChina Open in October, losing in the final to top seedsSimone Bolelli andAndrea Vavassori.[31] The next week they won theStockholm Open, defeatingPetr Nouza andPatrik Rikl in the final.[32][33] They followed this by reaching the semifinals at theVienna Open, losing in a deciding tiebreak to wildcards and eventual champions Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler after squandering two match points.[34]
Patten reached a career-high ranking of world No. 15 on 28 October 2024, becoming the British men's doubles No.1 for the first time.[35] His place alongside Heliovaara at theATP Finals was also confirmed with the duo having secured a top eight spot in the ATP Doubles Race to qualify.[36][37]
At the ATP Finals, Patten and Heliövaara defeated world No.1 team MarcelGranollers and Horacio Zeballos in straight sets in their first group match.[38][39] In their second group match, they defeated US Open champions Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell in straight sets.[40][41][42] Patten and Heliövaara then secured first place in their group by winning their third match against Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic in a deciding champions tiebreak.[43][44] They lost in the semifinals to top seeds Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić in two sets, both of which went to tiebreaks.[45][46]
Alongside Heliövaara, Patten won the doubles title at theAustralian Open, defeating third seedsSimone Bolelli andAndrea Vavassori in the final and in doing so, becoming the third British player to win the event in theOpen Era.[47][48][49] On the way to the final they overcameRithvik Choudary Bollipalli andRyan Seggerman,[50]Marc Polmans andMatthew Romios,[51]Austin Krajicek andRajeev Ram,[52][53] 15th seedsHugo Nys andEdouard Roger-Vasselin[54][55] and fourth seedsKevin Krawietz andTim Pütz.[56] PartneringOlivia Nicholls, he also reached themixed doubles semifinals after overcoming top seeds Andrea Vavassori andSara Errani in the second round[57] and thenJackson Withrow andIrina Khromacheva in the quarterfinals.[58][59] They lost toJohn-Patrick Smith andKimberly Birrell in the last four.[60] Patten reached a career-high of world No. 3 in the ATP doubles rankings on 27 January.[61]
Seeded second, Patten and Heliövaara were runners-up at theDubai Tennis Championships, losing in the final toYuki Bhambri andAlexei Popyrin.[62][63]
