Hassan Tariq (22 October 1934 – 24 April 1982) was aPakistanifilm director,film producer andscreenwriter who was famous for making films likeAnjuman,Kaneez,Baharo Phool Barsao andDevar Bhabi.
Hassan was born on 22 October 1934 inAmritsar,India. He migrated to Pakistan after itsestablishment. He started his career as anassistant director.[1] He directed his first film,Neend (Sleep) in 1959 and became a successful director. He made around 40 films inPakistan film industry and was the main reason behind the success of his wifeRani.[2][3]
Most of his films revolve around the falling women characters or ahooker with a heart of gold, he who had freely explored and exposed the masses to the nawab-tawaif (courtesan) culture.[4][5][6] His three famous films, such asAnjuman (1970),Umrao Jaan Ada (1972) andSurraya Bhopali (1976) all tell the story of tawaif.[7][8]
Hassan married three times. He was married with actressNighat Sultana, dancer Emi Minwala and actressRani.[9][2][10][3]
He died on 24 April 1982 atLahore, Pakistan.[10]
