Hashim ibn Utba ibn Abi Waqqas (Arabic:هاشم بن عتبة بن أبي وقاص,romanizedHāshim ibn ʿUtba ibn Abī Waqqāṣ), was aMuslim army commander. He wasSa'd ibn Abi Waqqas's nephew through his father, and was acompanion ofMuhammad. Hāshim participated in theRidda wars to force rebellious Arab tribes to return to Islam after the death of Muhammad. He fought theByzantines in theBattle of Yarmouk under the command ofKhalid ibn al-Walid. He played a vital role in theBattle of al-Qādisiyyah that led to the conquest ofAl-Mada'in by Muslims. He died in theBattle of Siffin fighting on the side ofAli.

Biography

Hashim ibn Utbah was born after Muhammad proclaimed his prophethood.[1]

Hashim embraced Islam during theConquest of Mecca.[1]

During the outbreak of theGreat apostate rebellions, Hashim participated against the rebellious Arabic tribes following the death of Mohammad in order to return them to Islam.

Hashim participated in theBattle of the Yarmuk.[1]Ibn 'Abd al-Barr recorded that Hashim lost one of his eyes during this battle.[2]

Shia historianIbn Musa al-Khwarizmi reported Hashim was sent to Iraq and participated in theBattle of al-Qadisiyyah.[3]

Hashim ibn Utbah was sent bySa'd ibn Abi Waqqas to lead the army to thebattle of Jalula, where Hashim dispatchedJarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali from theBajila tribe with a heavy force of cavalry to check the enemy position.[4]
