Hans Sotin (born 10 September 1939) is a Germanoperaticbass.
He was born inDortmund and studied at the DortmundHochschule für Musik. He made his operatic debut in 1962 inEssen as the Police Commissioner inStrauss'sDer Rosenkavalier. He joined theHamburg State Opera in 1964 where he was made aKammersänger.[1] He had a long career in which he sang most of the major bass roles in many opera houses, both in Europe and America. He made numerous appearances at theBayreuth Festival over several decades.[2]
His signature roles wereSarastro and the majorWagnerian noble-bass roles, includingKing Marke,Gurnemanz,the Landgrave, andVeit Pogner. He occasionally playedBaron Ochs, andHunding. He playedWotan a few times.[3]
Sotin made numerous recordings of operatic, sacred, and symphonic works, including theVerdiRequiem, the RossiniStabat Mater, Beethoven'sChoral Symphony,Missa Solemnis andMass in C, Mahler'sSymphony of a Thousand, Mozart'sMass in C minor, Haydn'sPaukenmesse, andCreation, Bach'sSaint Matthew Passion, and the roles of Sarastro and the Second Armed Man in two recordings ofThe Magic Flute, King Marke inTristan und Isolde, King Heinrich der Vogler inLohengrin, and Don Alfonso inCosi fan tutte. He can be seen on video as Sarastro as Gurnemanz, and as the Landgrave.[4]
He sang, and recorded, some of the heroic ballads and odes byCarl Loewe.
Since 1992, he has been a professor at theHochschule für Musik Köln. His retirement from the stage was celebrated on 1 June 2012 at theRichard Wagner Festival inWels.[5]
