Halba (Arabic:حلبا) is the capital ofAkkar Governorate innorthern Lebanon, close to the border withSyria. It is located at around34°33′2″N36°4′41″E / 34.55056°N 36.07806°E /34.55056; 36.07806. Its population is divided betweenSunni Muslim,Greek Orthodox Christians,Maronites, and followers of other religions.[1]
In 1838,Eli Smith noted the village, whose inhabitants wereGreek Orthodox, located west ofesh-Sheikh Mohammed.[2]
In 1856 it was namedHalba onKiepert's map of Palestine/Lebanon published that year.[3]
Halba is home toSada Akkar Newspaper, the only privately owned news agency inAkkar District. Halba is also home to a LebaneseRed Cross First Aid Center.[4] Today, the town has expanded from a village and has a majoritySunni Muslim population.
In 2014,Muslims made up 61.49% andChristians made up 38.27% of registered voters in Halba. 60.76% of the voters wereSunni Muslims, 26.46% wereGreek Orthodox and 8.50% wereMaronite Catholics.[5]
