Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai (Turkish:Hafsa Sultan Kervansarayı) is a 16th-centurycaravansarai inMarmarisilçe (district) ofMuğla Province, southwesternTurkey. It is situated to the north of theMarmaris Castle and the harbor[1] at36°51′05″N28°16′25″E / 36.85139°N 28.27361°E /36.85139; 28.27361.
Caravanserais were medieval-age inns in theIslamic countries. Marmaris Caravanserai was commissioned by theOttoman sultanSuleiman the Magnificent (reigned 1520–1566) during his campaign toRhodes in 1522–23. In this campaign, the mainAnatolian base of the Ottoman army was in Marmaris.[2] The building, with one big and seven small rooms,[3] was constructed to serve as headquarters.[4] Following the conquest of the island,[5] the building was transformed into a caravanserai. According to the inscription of the building, it was opened to service in 1545. It was named after Suleiman's motherHafsa Sultan (1479–1534).
Currently, the caravanserai is a private property and its rooms have been rented to touristic shops and taverns.[6] However it is planned to restore the building and transform it to a museum.[7]
