Gymnoris is agenus ofpasserine birds in the sparrow familyPasseridae. Three species are found inAfrica while theyellow-throated sparrow ranges from Turkey to India.
The genus was introduced by the English zoologistEdward Blyth in 1845 with theyellow-throated sparrow as thetype species.[2][3] The name combines theAncient Greek wordsgumnos "bare" or "naked" andrhinos "nostrils".[4]
