Guy Mervin Charles GreenOBEBSC(5 November 1913 – 15 September 2005) was anEnglish film director, producer, screenwriter, and cinematographer. In1948, he won anOscar ascinematographer for the filmGreat Expectations. In 2002, Green was given aLifetime Achievement Award by theBAFTA, and, in 2004, he was named an Officer of theOrder of the British Empire for his lifetime contributions to British cinema.

Biography

Green was born inFrome,Somerset,England. He began working in film in 1929 and became a noted filmcinematographer and a founding member of theBritish Society of Cinematographers. Green became a full-time director of photography in the mid-1940s, working on such films asDavid Lean'sOliver Twist in 1948.

About1955, Green switched to directing, making his first films forNat Cohen.[1]

He moved toHollywood around1962. In addition to directingA Patch of Blue (1965), Green also wrote and co-produced the film. After his death, his widow Josephine toldAP that it was his proudest accomplishment. Among his other films as director areThe Angry Silence (1960),The Mark (1961) (nominated for thePalme d'Or at theCannes Film Festival),Jacqueline Susann's Once Is Not Enough (1975), andThe Devil's Advocate (1977).

Green felt his career never recovered from the cancellation of a high profile film in 1969 during pre production.[2]

Green died in hisBeverly Hills home from kidney and heart failure, aged 91. In addition to his wife of 57 years, he was survived by his son, Michael; his daughter, Marilyn Feldman; and two grandchildren.
