The 2024Grand Slam was a two-partprofessional wrestlingtelevision special produced byAll Elite Wrestling (AEW). It was the fourth annualGrand Slam event and took place on September 25, 2024, at theArthur Ashe Stadium in theQueens borough ofNew York City, encompassing the broadcasts ofWednesday Night Dynamite andSaturday Night Collision.Dynamite airedlive onTBS whileCollision aired ontape delay on September 28 onTNT.
Thirteen matches were contested at the event, five of which aired live onDynamite with the other eight taped forCollision. In the main event of theDynamite broadcast,Jon Moxley defeatedDarby Allin to become the number one contender for theAEW World Championship atWrestleDream. In the main event ofCollision,Kazuchika Okada defeatedSammy Guevara in aChampionship Eliminator match, barring Guevara from challenging Okada for theAEW Continental Championship for as long as Okada is champion. TheDynamite episode was also notable for the retirement of theFTW Championship and the AEW debut ofMVP.
This year's event changed the format for Grand Slam as for the prior three events, the second part had aired as a special episode ofFriday Night Rampage. It would subsequently be the final Grand Slam to air as a two-part television special and held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in late September as the following year's event will be produced in February as a one-night standalone special inAustralia calledGrand Slam Australia.
Grand Slam is an annualprofessional wrestling event produced by the American promotionAll Elite Wrestling (AEW) since 2021. From its inception, the event was held at theArthur Ashe Stadium in theNew York City borough ofQueens in late September and originally aired as a two-parttelevision special that encompassed the broadcasts ofWednesday Night Dynamite andFriday Night Rampage.[2][3][4] On June 30, 2024, AEW announced that the fourth Grand Slam would be held on September 25. Unlike prior years, however, the 2024 event was announced to air asDynamite onTBS and AEW's Saturday night program,Collision, which premiered in June 2023 onTNT.Collision was taped the same night asDynamite and aired ontape delay on September 28.[5]
Grand Slam featuredprofessional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds andstorylines.[6] Storylines were produced on AEW's weekly television programs,Dynamite,Rampage, andCollision.
At the beginning of theDynamite broadcast it was the opening match withNigel McGuiness taking onBryan Danielson. McGuiness ordered Danielson out and request the title be stripped if he didn't show up. Danielson then came out for the match. In the end, Danielson transitioned from a series of strikes into his signature LeBell Lock, forcing McGuinness to tap out.[7]
Up next, wasHook taking onRoderick Strong for theFTW Championship in aFTW Rules match. In the end, Hook dodged the End of Heartache by Strong, Hook then quickly applied the Red Rum, making Strong tap out. After the match, Strong and his fellowUndisputed Kingdom membersMatt Taven andMike Bennett shook Hook's hand. Hook was then interviewed byTony Schiavone and announced the retirement of the FTW title and gave it to his fatherTaz.[7]
After that, theAEW World Tag Team ChampionsThe Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson andNicholas Jackson) put their titles on the line againstKyle Fletcher andWill Ospreay. In the end, After a chaotic sequence, The Bucks hit the BTE Trigger on Fletcher, following an illegal belt shot, to retain their titles.[7]
In the penultimate match of theDynamite broadcast,Mariah May put herAEW Women's Championship on the line againstYuka Sakazaki. In the end, May hit a high-angle Regal Knee followed by the Storm Zero for the pin retaining her championship in the process.[7]
In the main event of theDynamite broadcast,Jon Moxley facedDarby Allin with the winner facingBryan Danielson for theAEW World Championship atWrestleDream. In the end, Moxley hit Allin with a Death Rider from the middle rope, securing the win and his spot as the number one contender.[7]
