TheGovernment of Meghalaya, also known as theState Government of Meghalaya, is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state ofMeghalaya and its12 districts. It consists of anexecutive, led by theGovernor of Meghalaya, ajudiciary and alegislative branch.
Like other states in India, the head of state of Meghalaya is theGovernor, appointed by thePresident of India on the advice of the Union Government. The post of governor is largely ceremonial. TheChief Minister is the head of government and is vested with most of the executive powers.Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, and houses theVidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the Secretariat. TheMeghalaya High Court, located inShillong, Meghalaya, exercises the jurisdiction and powers in respect of cases arising in the State of Meghalaya.
The presentMeghalaya Legislative Assembly isunicameral, consisting of 60Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Its term is 5 years, unless sooner dissolved.[1]
