George Singleton is an American author who has written eight collections ofshort stories, twonovels, a collection ofessays, and an instructional book on writingfiction. He was born inAnaheim, California, and raised inGreenwood, South Carolina. Singleton graduated fromFurman University in 1980 with a degree inphilosophy and was an inductee intoPhi Beta Kappa. He also holds an MFA degree from theUniversity of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Singleton was the longstanding teacher of fiction writing and editing at theSouth Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities inGreenville, South Carolina.[1] In 2009, Singleton was a Guggenheim fellow,[2] and in 2011 he was awarded the Hillsdale Award for Fiction by theFellowship of Southern Writers.[3] In 2013,[4] Singleton accepted the John C. Cobb Endowed Chair in the Humanities atWofford College, where he taught until 2020.[5] Singleton was inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Writers in April 2015, and was awarded the John William Corrington Award for Literary Excellence in 2016.[6] In 2024, Singleton appeared on theSEC Network television programTrueSouth Presented by YellaWood.[7]
