English cricket journalist
George Dobell (born 4 May 1972)[1] is an English cricket journalist.
Dobell is chief cricket writer atThe Cricketer. He was formerly senior cricket correspondent atESPNcricinfo.[2] He has written forSPIN Magazine, andThe Cricketer as well asThe Guardian,[3]The Times[4][5] and theBirmingham Post.[6] He has contributed to the cricket almanacWisden.[7]
Dobell was the ghost writer for the autobiography of formerEngland andWarwickshire cricketerJonathan Trott entitledUnguarded.[8][9][10]
On 10 October 2018, Dobell was included in the list of the most respected journalists working in Britain as published by theNational Council for the Training of Journalists.[11]
Dobell regularly appears on theSwitch Hit cricket podcast[12][13] as well as guesting on theLord's podcast,[14] and theOne Stump Short podcast.[15]
ESPNcricinfo have a regular video feature at the end of a Test match day's play entitledPolite Enquiries in which Dobell and his colleagues (such asJarrod Kimber andMelinda Farrell) answer viewers' questions.[16][17] Dobell regularly appears on theTest Match Special journalist panel at lunch on the final day of aTest match.[18] He has appeared regularly on theSky Sports programmeCricket Writers on TV,[19]TalkSport,[20][21] and onBBC Radio 5 Live.[22][23]
Dobell possesses both British andNew Zealand passports, the latter by virtue of his mother. As a child he watched a lot ofSomerset County Cricket Club matches and his favourite players wereIan Botham andViv Richards.[1]
