Gary Armstrong Powell[1] (born 11 November 1969) is a British musician. He is known for being the drummer for the rock bandsThe Libertines andDirty Pretty Things.[2]
Powell is primarily known for being the drummer for the British bandsThe Libertines[2] andDirty Pretty Things, as well as Guyanese-British reggae musicianEddy Grant.[3] He joined The Libertines in 2001 after being introduced to frontmenCarl Barât andPete Doherty by their then-manager Banny Poostchi. He also played with theNew York Dolls for their 2004 reunion shows, Powell has performed at the Isle of Wight Festival, Wireless Festival, T in the Park and Oxygen, as well as playing withRed Hot Chili Peppers.[3] Powell also has a successful DJ career, deejaying for club NME at London's Koko and Carl Barat's club night as well as many other venues in London.[3] From 2016 to January 2019, Powell was the touring drummer forska bandThe Specials, replacing the late John Bradbury. He also runs his own record label, 25 Hour Convenience Store.[4]
Powell has two sons, Wolfe and Asa, with long-term partner Jude.
