Garth Davis (born 1974) is an Australian television, advertising, and film director, best known for directing the filmsLion (2016), and biblical dramaMary Magdalene (2018). He earlier directed episodes of the seriesTop of the Lake (2013).

Garth Davis was born in 1974.[1]

Davis directed several episodes of the seriesTop of the Lake (2013).[2]

In October 2013,Warner Bros. Pictures hired Davis to direct a film adaptation ofShantaram, but that did not come to fruition;[3] instead, it was later made into atelevision adaptation forApple TV+.[4]

He directedThe Weinstein Company filmLion, in his feature film directorial debut, which premiered to rave reviews at theToronto International Film Festival in 2016.[5][6]

In January 2016, Davis was hired to direct abiopic aboutMary Magdalene, titledMary Magdalene, written byHelen Edmundson.[7][8] The film had its world premiere at theNational Portrait Gallery inLondon in February 2018.[9]

In 2019, Davis teamed up withSee-Saw Films joint directorsEmile Sherman andIain Canning in a new production company called I AM THAT, withSamantha Lang as head of development.[10]

In August 2020, it was announced that Davis would direct a sequel toTron: Legacy, titledTron: Ares forWalt Disney Pictures.[11] In January 2023, it was announced thatJoachim Rønning would instead direct the film.[12]

In April 2022,Screen Australia announced funding forImmersion, a science fiction drama TV series to be directed by Davis, written byMatt Vesely (Aftertaste) andexecutive produced byEmile Sherman (The King's Speech) and director/producerSamantha Lang.[13]
