Garrett Camp (born October 4, 1978) is a Canadian-French businessman, investor, and software engineer.[ 2] [ 3] He helped build the search engineStumbleUpon and is a co-founder ofUber .[ 4] He lives inLos Angeles .[ 5]
Early life and education [ edit ] Camp was born and raised inCalgary, Alberta , Canada.[ 1] His father was an economist, and his mother an artist; both later became home builders.[ 5] In 2001 he graduated from theUniversity of Calgary with a bachelor's degree inelectrical engineering . Later he earned a master's degree in software engineering with a focus oncollaborative systems ,evolutionary algorithms , andinformation retrieval .[ 1]
Camp at the 2008The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam In 2002, Camp co-foundedStumbleUpon . It was the first personalizedsearch engine platform.[ 4] [ 6] [ 7] [ 8] [ 9] [ 10] [ 11] In 2007, StumbleUpon was acquired byeBay [ 12] and in 2009 StumbleUpon was spun-out.[ 13] [ 14] [ 15] [ 16] [ 17] [ 18] Following its spin-off, Camp worked to expand its services[ 16] and grow the company.[ 19] In 2012, Camp left StumbleUpon.[ 20]
In 2014, Camp founded Expa Labs with the goal of growing new companies.[ 21] In 2015, Camp reacquired StumbleUpon.[ 22] It operated until 2018, when it transitioned to Mix, a venture built in part through Expa Labs.[ 23] [ 24]
In 2009, Camp foundedUber as UberCab[ 25] [ 26] [ 27] In 2011, the company continued to expand across the United States and abroad.[ 28] [ 29] In 2020, Camp left Uber's board of directors but remained a board observer.[ 30]
In 2022, Camp was portrayed by actorJon Bass inSuper Pumped , a drama series based on Uber.[ 31]
In the past, Camp has invested inPrism Skylabs ;[ 32] and BlackJet, an on-demand private aviation service.[ 33]
